چکیده

Results of a long-term (1985–1999) photometric study of the VY Scl novalike TT Ari and CCD spectroscopic observations of the star in the region of Hα are presented. Photoelectric UBV observations carried out at Rozhen and Belogradchik observatories confirmed ∼ 6 years cyclical variability of the accretion disc luminosity in high state found by frequency analysis of 70 years long light curve. The data show that the color indexes vary with the same cycle length and that in the maximum of the cycle TT Ari becomes bluer. The analysis of the “3hour” modulations in 1995–1998 data indicates a replacement of the ∼ 0d.1340 “negative superhump” by ∼ 0d.1492 “positive” one in 1997. The new wave remains active for at least a year. Based on 45 runs obtained from 1987 to 1998 in U and B bands the behaviour of the “20-min” quasi-periodic oscillations and the flickering during both “negative” and “positive superhumps” regimes is investigated. All runs show strong flickering activity and power spectra with a typical red noise shape. It is found that Hα profiles and the observational characteristics of the flickering are different after 1997 when the “positive superhump” regime started. Generally, the activity of the flickering decreased by ∼ 50% in 1997–1998. The autoregressive analysis suggests that the “20-min” QPOs observed in TT Ari light curves are most probably generated by some stochastic process such as the flickering.

TT Arietis : the low state revisited ?

We present optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy of TT Ari obtained during the 1982−85 low state. In November/December 1983, accretion had almost completely ceased, unveiling both the white dwarf and the secondary star. The IUE spectrum obtained during that occasion contains absorption lines ofLyα, Si IV, C IV, and He II. We derive a photospheric temperature of Twd = 39 000K and find the abundan...

I review the observational properties of SW Sex stars. I show that they can be explained by an accretion stream overflowing the disc, combined with an accretion disc wind. I suggest that SW Sex behaviour is caused by episodes of very high mass transfer, which are balanced by VY Scl low states.

Recent results on intermediate polars

I review recent activity in the field of intermediate polars, concentrating on: the mode of accretion (disc-fed, disc-overflow or discless); accretion curtains (the transition region and the accretion footprint); X-ray pulse profiles (occultation and absorption effects); accretion columns (mass determinations, line-broadening, the soft X-ray component), and outbursts in intermediate polars.

A precessing accretion disc in the intermediate polar XY Arietis?

Context. XY Ari is the only intermediate polar to show deep X-ray eclipses of its white dwarf. Previously published observations with Ginga and Chandra have also revealed a broad X-ray orbital modulation, roughly antiphased with the eclipse, and presumed to be due to absorption in an extended structure near the edge of an accretion disc. The X-ray pulse profile is generally seen to be double-pe...

Mass Flow and Accretion through gaps in Accretion Discs

We study the structure and dynamics of the gap created by a protoplanet in an accretion disc. The hydrodynamic equations for a flat, two-dimensional, non-selfgravitating protostellar accretion disc with an embedded, Jupiter sized protoplanet on a circular orbit are solved. To simulate possible accretion of mass onto the protoplanet we continually remove mass from the interior of the planet’s Ro...
